You Can't Beat Our Mead
Mead People 716: The Story Of Us
A couple of years ago Daniel’s friend was experimenting with yeast and fermented food. He was learning how to make things like sour dough breads, sour kraut’s and kimchi’s. He also made a batch of mead… a fermented wine made from honey & water. Inviting Daniel over to try the mead, he found that he was instantly in love with this drink.
Daniel, having some wine making experience, decided he wanted to make a batch of his own. It turned out ok. He learned a lot and tried again. That turned out a little better. He wanted to make another attempt, and this is where we insert Kate. She wanted to try it out too. So they wandered around the farmers’ market, and got the honey they needed. They met at Daniel’s house and put everything together in his basement. This turned into the first batch of what we call “Kung Fu Girl” (Mead People 716’s traditional mead).
This is where they realized they were on to something…
Fast forward a couple years, and a bunch of different recipes later, to Daniel and Kate discussing starting their own Meadery. A Meadery is just like a winery with one difference, it makes mead (honey wine), not grape wine. They walked around their neighborhood brainstorming, planning, and dreaming what it would be like to own their own Meadery. Having a small business already in its fifth year of success, they were not scared of launching something new. They just needed a name…
They had a ton of ideas. They discussed them on the couch in the middle of a movie. They sent text messages back and forth in the middle of the work day when they thought of something new. Nothing was sticking…
One day they wandered into their favorite local winery: Ten Thousand Vines (yes, we're giving a free plug to some good friends of our). They inquired after the owner so they could purchase some home wine making supplies from their back room. The woman behind the counter was new, and was just about to ask who they were. She then paused, and said “I know you, you’re the Mead People”!
YES!!! Yes we are.
And, holding tightly to our love of Buffalo, we added the 716 to the end.
Whether you call us Kate & Daniel, or you know us as the Mead People, that’s our story, and we’re sticking to it!
